What are the benefits of regular hygiene visits?

Visiting a dental hygienist regularly is a cornerstone of maintaining a healthy, vibrant smile. Here are the key benefits of you should keep in mind.

Deep Cleaning

No matter how meticulous we are with our daily brushing and flossing, stubborn plaque and tartar can still accumulate. A dental hygienist uses specialised tools to gently and effectively remove these deposits, protecting your teeth and gums from potential issues.

Early Detection

Regular hygiene visits facilitate the early detection of dental problems such as cavities, gum disease, and even oral cancer. By spotting these concerns in their infancy, you stand a better chance of simpler, more effective treatments.

Stain Removal

Consumption of certain foods, drinks, and other lifestyle habits can result in teeth staining. Hygienists can help remove surface stains, giving your teeth a cleaner and brighter appearance.

Gum Health

A significant part of the hygienist’s role is to ensure the health of your gums, as they form the foundation of your oral health. They can offer advice and treatments to prevent or combat gum diseases like gingivitis or periodontitis.

Oral Health Education

Your hygiene visit is also an educational opportunity. Hygienists can provide tailored advice on optimal cleaning techniques, the best oral care products, and dietary tips to maintain your oral health.

Airflow

Airflow helps refresh your smile by effectively cleaning hard to reach areas and restoring your teeth’s natural brightness.

I am, like a lot of people, a very nervous dental patient. The idea of the job that need to be done (complex exctraction of a tooth that was broken above to gum and roots that were broken below the gum) on this visit had me feeling very anxious. The dental team were fantastic though. Really put me at ease, and they did the work in double quick time. Fantastic team and a nice, clean environment. Would definitely recommend them.

I’ve had my new smile for two months now and couldn’t be happier with the results! I’ve received so many compliments, and a big thank you to the whole team at One Dental, especially Dr Hannah, for her amazing work. I wanted to enhance my smile while keeping it looking natural, and that’s exactly what the team delivered. People are often surprised to hear I’ve had my teeth enhanced because they look so natural, which is exactly what I was hoping for. I couldn’t recommend them enough!

I really can’t speak highly enough of Dr Olivia and the team at One Dental. I went through the aligner process followed by composite bonding and couldn’t be happier with the results. Dr Olivia was so patient, compassionate and genuinely lovely throughout the entire process. She was always so friendly and kind, and really took the time to make sure I was comfortable and happy at every stage. I honestly couldn’t have asked for more. The team at One Dental were also incredibly accommodating with appointment times, and the practice itself is lovely, with really comfortable treatment rooms. I’m so happy with my teeth and so grateful to Dr Olivia for making the whole experience such a positive one. I couldn’t recommend her or One Dental more highly!

I had a great experience at the clinic. Mr Mo was friendly, professional and made me feel comfortable throughout my Botox appointment. He explained everything clearly and took the time to answer my questions. I’m very happy with the service and would definitely recommend him.

Frequently asked questions

What does a dental hygienist do differently from a dentist?

While both are essential for oral health, a dental hygienist focuses on preventive care, performing professional cleanings, scaling, root planing, and offering oral hygiene education. Dentists, on the other hand, diagnose and treat dental issues, perform restorative procedures, and oversee overall dental health plans.

It’s generally recommended to visit a dental hygienist every six months for a regular cleaning and check-up. However, based on individual oral health needs, such as gum disease or high plaque buildup, more frequent visits might be advised.
Most patients find hygiene appointments to be comfortable. There may be mild discomfort during certain procedures, especially if there’s significant tartar buildup or gum sensitivity. However, hygienists are trained to ensure patient comfort, and you can always communicate any discomfort during the session.
Absolutely! Dental hygienists are well-versed in the latest oral care products and can provide recommendations based on your specific needs, whether it’s a toothpaste for sensitive teeth, the right mouthwash, or guidance on choosing an electric toothbrush.
Yes, while dental hygienists play a crucial role in preventive care, regular check-ups with a dentist are vital for comprehensive oral health. Dentists can identify and treat issues, offer restorative solutions, and work in tandem with hygienists to ensure optimal dental health.
