Root Canal

Root canal treatment is a dental procedure designed to treat infection or damage within the pulp (the innermost soft tissue) of a tooth. By removing the affected tissue, cleaning, disinfecting, and then filling and sealing the tooth’s inner chambers, the procedure can save a tooth that might otherwise need extraction. Despite its daunting reputation, modern root canal treatments are relatively painless and often no more uncomfortable than getting a filling.

What are the benefits of root canal treatment?

Root canal treatment is often misunderstood, with many fearing it as a painful ordeal. However, in the hands of skilled professionals and with the advancements in dental technology, root canals have become routine procedures with several notable benefits:

Tooth Preservation

The primary advantage of a root canal is that it allows for the preservation of your natural tooth. By doing so, it eliminates the need for tooth extraction and the subsequent decisions of tooth replacements like bridges or implants.

Pain Relief

Contrary to popular belief, root canals are a solution to pain, not the cause. When a tooth becomes infected or abscessed, it can lead to severe discomfort. A root canal addresses the root cause of this pain, providing much-needed relief.

Efficient Chewing

With the affected tooth treated and restored, patients can return to optimal bite force and chewing functionality. This ensures that you can enjoy your favourite foods without discomfort or fear of further damage.

Prevent the Spread of Infection

If left untreated, the infection in the tooth pulp can spread to surrounding tissues and even lead to systemic issues. A root canal stops the progression of this infection, safeguarding your overall health.

Natural Appearance

Post-procedure, the treated tooth is usually restored with a crown that matches the colour of your adjacent teeth. This ensures that the aesthetics of your smile remain intact and natural-looking.

Cost-Effective

By addressing the issue directly and preserving the natural tooth, root canals often prove to be more cost-effective than extraction and replacement with artificial solutions.

I am, like a lot of people, a very nervous dental patient. The idea of the job that need to be done (complex exctraction of a tooth that was broken above to gum and roots that were broken below the gum) on this visit had me feeling very anxious. The dental team were fantastic though. Really put me at ease, and they did the work in double quick time. Fantastic team and a nice, clean environment. Would definitely recommend them.

I’ve had my new smile for two months now and couldn’t be happier with the results! I’ve received so many compliments, and a big thank you to the whole team at One Dental, especially Dr Hannah, for her amazing work. I wanted to enhance my smile while keeping it looking natural, and that’s exactly what the team delivered. People are often surprised to hear I’ve had my teeth enhanced because they look so natural, which is exactly what I was hoping for. I couldn’t recommend them enough!

I really can’t speak highly enough of Dr Olivia and the team at One Dental. I went through the aligner process followed by composite bonding and couldn’t be happier with the results. Dr Olivia was so patient, compassionate and genuinely lovely throughout the entire process. She was always so friendly and kind, and really took the time to make sure I was comfortable and happy at every stage. I honestly couldn’t have asked for more. The team at One Dental were also incredibly accommodating with appointment times, and the practice itself is lovely, with really comfortable treatment rooms. I’m so happy with my teeth and so grateful to Dr Olivia for making the whole experience such a positive one. I couldn’t recommend her or One Dental more highly!

I had a great experience at the clinic. Mr Mo was friendly, professional and made me feel comfortable throughout my Botox appointment. He explained everything clearly and took the time to answer my questions. I’m very happy with the service and would definitely recommend him.
Root Canal

Frequently asked questions

Is a root canal painful?
Modern root canal procedures are performed under local anaesthesia, ensuring that patients experience little to no pain during the treatment. Patients might experience some discomfort after the procedure, but this can typically be managed with over-the-counter painkillers.
A root canal is necessary when the pulp, the innermost part of a tooth, becomes infected or inflamed due to decay, trauma, or other factors. Without treatment, the infection can spread, leading to severe pain and the potential loss of the tooth.
The duration of a root canal treatment varies depending on the complexity of the case. On average, a single root canal can take about 1 to 2 hours. Some cases might require multiple appointments, especially if the infection is extensive.
After a root canal, the tooth may feel sensitive for a few days. Your dentist might prescribe pain medication if needed. A crown is usually placed over the treated tooth to protect it and restore its strength and appearance.
The primary alternative to a root canal is tooth extraction. However, preserving your natural tooth with a root canal is often preferable, as it maintains your smile’s aesthetics, and chewing functionality, and prevents the need for more complex tooth replacements. Your dentist will guide you in making the best decision based on your specific case.
